As with other aspects of life, social media significantly impacts International Women’s Day. It does this primarily through raising awareness of protests held in countries run by autocrats, especially those that involve women and dissent in larger contexts.
In 1910, a German feminist called for a worldwide commemoration during an international conference of social women held in Copenhagen, followed by a European commemoration the following year. Talking about International Women’s Day would only be complete with recognizing the countless forgotten heroes who have improved their communities. Women in Eastern Europe have traditionally been given flowers on March 8 and sometimes have the day off from work. However, giving out chocolates and candies may be seen as minimizing the significant obstacles that drive women to participate in rallies, particularly in regions where such protests have been tainted by violence.
In honor of International Women’s Day, let us raise our voices, tell the stories that need to be said, and unite in our quest for a society where equality is a reality that is experienced rather than simply an idea. International Women’s Day reminds us that we are all working together to break down boundaries and create a future in which women are respected in all ways and acknowledged and recognized as equals.
Every step toward gender equality should be considered part of always working as a team.
Take steps to remove obstacles. It’s a day to recognize the work that still needs to be done and appreciate the successes.
Happy International Women’s Day 2024.
