Oprah Winfrey opened up on the Television show about her weight loss struggles over two decades. When I was 25, I was teased about my weight like it was a national sport. It’s a great time when WinFree weight-loss drugs like Ozympic are talking about a rise, with quarterly prescriptions for WinFree quadrupling between 2020 and 2022, according to a report by data Analyst Trident Health.
Oprah Winfrey said, in particular, in “An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame, and the Weight Loss Revolution,”
“I wanted to do this special for the more than 100 million people in the United States and the over one billion people around the world living with obesity,” Winfrey said as she opened the special.
The 70-year-old broadcaster said: “Stop judging people, stop shaming people for being overweight or underweight, stop expressing opinions about how they choose to be overweight or underweight.” All I can say is stop flattering yourself by saying all this.
Oprah Winfrey recalled her embarrassment after seeing Best and Worst Dressed on TV Guide in 1990 and how she was described as a bombshell and downright dumpy.
“All these years, I thought all of the people who never had to diet were just using their willpower and, for some reason, stronger than me,” Oprah Winfrey said.
For the next 25 years, I was mocked on every talk show and tabloid cover. Meanwhile, headlines were written about Winfrey being fatter than ever; Oprah warned, “Diet or die.”
To combat all this shame, she starved herself for five months in 1988, speaking on a talk show where she went to pull a red wagon full of fat, symbolizing her weight loss. Feeling ashamed while fighting a war is a familiar story.
The medical experts there talked about the benefits of weight loss drugs as well as their disadvantages and informed them that it is essential to consider before taking these drugs.
“In my lifetime, I never dreamed we would be talking about medicines that would be providing hope to people, like me, who have struggled for years with being overweight or with obesity,” Oprah Winfrey said.
Oprah Winfrey emotionally said that weight loss gives people a sense of hope. Don’t blame yourself. Now, she doesn’t deny herself food but eats in small portions.” And I prefer walking instead of driving. She said it’s not just one thing; it’s many things. I have blamed myself many times, but not anymore. Let go of your shame and blame. They have no place in our lives anymore.
W Scott Butsch, Director of Obesity Medicine in the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, was among the medical experts who participated in the special. He said, “There’s a spectrum of obesity. It’s not one disease. It’s many different subtypes of disease.” He added, “It’s not a matter of willpower.”
